Earlier in the year The Wellington Monument project was shortlisted for the Museums and Heritage Awards under the Restoration or Conservation Project of the Year category.
On the evening of the 11th May at a glittering ceremony in London, the project was awarded Highly Commended!
It was very exciting!
A big thank you to everybody involved, including: the National Trust, Inskip Gee Architects, Structural Engineers Mann Williams, Apex Scaffolding Exeter, Lovell Stone Group, South West Cranes. and of course our site manager, Mark Holland who let the very talented SSHC on-site team. It is a tremendous honour to recieve such an award and there were some truly inspiring projects within all the categories.
At 53 metres in height, Wellington Monument is the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. Grade II* Listed, it was built in 1817 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo, the site had been closed for more than ten years due to stones falling to ground. Fundraising by the National Trust enabled this significant programme of repairs to be undertaken and to be saved for future generations.
